We get a marquee matchup in Chapel Hill as Bill Belichick makes his highly anticipated college debut with North Carolina against Sonny Dykes and TCU. All eyes will be on Belichick, and one thing we know about his teams—they’re disciplined, fundamentally sound, and prepared. The Tar Heels had heavy roster turnover on defense, losing their top four tacklers, and Bill has entrusted his son Stephen Belichick with the coordinator role. Expect a defense-first identity as they look to build from the ground up.
For TCU, Josh Hoover is back after a strong 2024 campaign, giving the Horned Frogs stability at quarterback. Sonny Dykes enters his fourth season, and this year’s defense projects to be much improved, particularly in the secondary. That unit should make things difficult for new UNC starter Gio Lopez, who will be tested early by a group that thrives on limiting explosive plays.
This has the makings of a grinder. First games often come with rust, both staffs know the spotlight is on, and both defenses should be ahead of the offenses at this stage. Belichick will lean on discipline and field position, while TCU’s defense will look to frustrate the Tar Heels into long, methodical drives.
We like the under here. With two quality defensive game plans, new faces on UNC’s offense, and the weight of a nationally televised opener, points could be at a premium.
