With a short NHL slate tonight, there’s still plenty to like — and for today only, I’m tossing out my Play of the Day on the free side.
Minnesota heads east to face off against the 5–1 Devils, a team that’s been rolling offensively with a T-2nd ranked 4.0 goals per game. New Jersey is giving the crease to Nico Daws, who’s making his first start of the season. Daws showed flashes of potential in limited NHL action last year, but I expect the Wild’s top-heavy attack to test him early and often.
Minnesota currently owns the league’s best power play, while New Jersey counters with the 3rd-best penalty kill — strength on strength. It’ll be interesting to see if the Wild can break through at least once with the man advantage. On the flip side, the Devils’ power play has been firing at a high clip, and they’ll face a Minnesota PK that’s been… well, less than inspiring so far.
When you see a total set at 5.5 in today’s NHL, it tends to grab attention — especially early in the year. You’ve got two explosive offenses, one goaltender struggling, and another making his season debut. Everything about this matchup screams Over 5.5 to me.
