Many of the Tigers’ promising young bats have come together this season. That has been evident in the first two games of the series with Detroit putting up 23 runs. Only six teams in the majors average more runs per game than Detroit. The Tigers have scored five or more runs in eight of their last nine games.
Rookie Cam Schlitter is tasked with trying to slow down the Tigers today. Schlitter was slammed his last start giving up four earned runs in 1 2/3 innings at home against the Blue Jays. Aside from recently acquired closer David Bednar, the Yankees’ bullpen has been disappointing.
Speaking of bullpens, this is a bullpen game for the Tigers with Tyler Holton expected to open. He has not pitched more than 2 2/3 innings in any of his outings. Detroit has an average bullpen, ranking eighth in the AL in ERA at 3.98.
The Yankees lead the majors in runs, homers and OPS. Their bats are overdue to break out.
